Six things that decide whether you have a claim
Most people who drove a financed vehicle in this period meet the criteria without realising it. Unsure about any of them? Check anyway, it costs nothing.
A car, van or motorbike on finance
The vehicle had to be bought on credit rather than paid for outright. Personal Contract Purchase and Hire Purchase are the two agreements that qualify most often.
Agreement taken between 2007 and 2021
Discretionary commission arrangements were banned in January 2021, so agreements signed before that date are the ones under review.
Arranged through a dealer or broker
The claim rests on the commission paid to whoever arranged the finance. If you went direct to your bank for a personal loan, that sits outside this scheme.
You were named on the agreement
You need to have been the borrower or a joint borrower. You can still claim on an agreement that has been settled, paid off or handed back.
You were not told what the broker earned
Most people never were. If the commission and the way it affected your interest rate were not explained clearly, that is the heart of the complaint.
More than one agreement is common
We find an average of two agreements per person, because most drivers change vehicle every three or four years. Each one is checked separately.

Discretionary commission was banned in January 2021. Agreements before that date are the ones under review.

Every figure here is published by the Financial Conduct Authority or derived from it. None of it is our own estimate, and none of it is a quotation for your claim.

£1,161
Illustration only. Our fee band runs from 18 to 36 percent including VAT and is set by the size of the award, so the exact percentage that applies to you is confirmed in writing before we start. Many claims recover less than this example, and some recover nothing at all.

Why use us
What you get for the fee
You can run this claim yourself for nothing. These are the reasons people choose not to, set out plainly so you can decide whether they are worth it to you.
No win, no fee, and nothing up front
You are never invoiced for a claim that fails. There is no registration charge, no admin charge and no charge for the initial check.
We trace agreements you have forgotten
Most people remember one car. We routinely surface a second or third agreement from a decade ago that the claimant had genuinely lost track of.
We tell you when you do not need us
If your check comes back with nothing worth pursuing, we say so and close the file. We would rather lose a case than run a claim that wastes your time.
The Ombudsman route is included
If a lender rejects a complaint we believe is sound, we prepare and submit the referral to the Financial Ombudsman Service. That is part of the same fee, not an extra.
One named handler, not a call centre queue
You get a direct contact who knows your file, so you are not repeating the same history to a different person on every call.
Clear, capped fees in writing first
Before we start you receive the exact fee band that applies to your claim, between 18 and 36 percent including VAT, with a 14 day cooling off period.

One named handler per file, from the first check to the payment.

Lender names are used to identify finance agreements only. Listing a lender does not imply any association with, or endorsement by, that lender.
“I had written the whole thing off as too much hassle. The check took a minute, and they came back with two agreements including one from a car I had part exchanged in 2014 and completely forgotten about.”
“What I appreciated most was being told plainly that one of my three agreements was not worth pursuing. It made me trust everything else they said about the other two.”
“The lender rejected it first time. They took it to the Ombudsman without me having to chase or fill in anything else, and kept me updated the whole way.”
FAQs
The questions people ask before starting
When you bought a vehicle on finance, the dealer or broker who arranged it was usually paid a commission by the lender. Under a discretionary commission arrangement, that broker could raise your interest rate and earn more for doing so. If this was not explained to you, you may have paid more than you should have, and you may be owed money back.
No. You can complain directly to your lender for free, and then refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service at no cost if you are not happy with the outcome. We charge a fee because we do the tracing, the paperwork, the chasing and the Ombudsman referral for you, but the free route is always open to you and we would rather you knew that before you signed anything.
The Financial Conduct Authority has estimated an average of about £829 per affected agreement. We find an average of 2 agreements per person, which is where the figure of £1,658 comes from. Your own outcome depends on how much you borrowed, the interest rate you were given and how long the agreement ran, so treat these as averages rather than a quote.
Personal Contract Purchase and Hire Purchase agreements on a car, van or motorbike taken out between 2007 and 2021. Discretionary commission was banned in January 2021, so later agreements are generally outside the scheme. Straightforward personal leases are usually excluded unless they were structured as a finance agreement.
Yes. A settled, part exchanged or voluntarily terminated agreement can still be complained about. What matters is that the agreement existed and that commission was arranged in a way that was not made clear to you at the time.
Not at all. Most people cannot. Give us your name, date of birth and the addresses you lived at during that period, and we will trace the agreements from there. There is an option on the form for exactly this.
Our fee is between 18 and 36 percent of any redress you receive, including VAT, banded by the size of the award. You pay nothing if the claim does not succeed, and nothing up front. You have 14 days to cancel free of charge. After that, if you cancel a claim we are still working on, we may charge £80 per hour plus VAT for work already done, capped at the fee that would have applied.
It varies a great deal. Lenders have been given extended deadlines by the regulator while the redress scheme is finalised, so a straightforward complaint can still take several months, and one referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service can take considerably longer. We will tell you where your file sits rather than give you a date we cannot stand behind.
No. Making a complaint about a past finance agreement is not a credit application and does not leave a footprint on your credit file or affect your score.
